History

The Congdon Estate holds a rich history:


Construction: The mansion was built by Chester Adgate Congdon, a successful lawyer and businessman, and his wife, Clara Bannister Congdon, between 1905 and 1908. It was designed by architect Clarence H. Johnston Sr. in the Jacobean architectural style.


Residence: The Congdon family resided in this grand estate, which features opulent interiors and beautiful gardens. It stood as a symbol of their prosperity during the Gilded Age.


Donation: In 1979, the Congdon family generously donated the mansion and its surrounding grounds to the University of Minnesota. This gift allowed the mansion to be preserved as a historic site and made it accessible to the public through tours.
